Today I left later in the morning for Arrowtown. Just 15k up the road. All I had in mind was a coffee, a stroll and a brain dead day.

Arrowtown is one of those places that you have to go to to be able to appreciate just how beautiful that it is.

The town dates back to the 1800’s when gold was found in the river giving birth to the township. Many of the buildings have been lovingly restored and many still have the same type of business operating within the walls. Although for that to be true on the street facing the river (trickle) then there must have been a lot of cafe’s in the town.

I parked in the free all day parking by the riverside and made a beeline for a cafe. Double shot flat white and one of those “famous” cheese rolls thanks.

Again, I had planned to do “bugger all” but Kerrie (who insisted that the cheese roll was in fact famous) convinced me that a bike ride to the wineries would meet my exploratory needs. Frankly I was all “explored out” which is why I took the bait and rented a bike.

The track is truly worth the effort. It is 15k or so to the first of the wineries which start just after the Bungee Jumping nightmare. The first half of the ride is flower lined and rainforest-esque. Families have made up camp on the rivers edge, some presumably fossicking for gold as illustrated by the rock dams they have built. Kids float down the river on boogie boards, branches and inflatable dinghies.

Powering on like there is no tomorrow, I come across several bridges, all of which offer a stunning view of what has surprisingly become more of a torrent than a trickle. I have my biking legs back, or so I thought.

The half way mark (6-7k) and the track opens to more of a road and the flowers disappear. Was I suckered in? It is about now that I reach for the non-existent water bottle.

Rounding a bend the sight of this suspension bridge smacks me in the face but it is too late to stop and I’m on the bridge mumbling “just keep going, just keep going, all good half way now, all good, nearly there” and made it over. I look behind me in an effort to appear tough and reduce my heart rate only to see two others walking over. Ppppp..

At least I had this slight grade for some respite.

I am in need of a rest but alas I am not wired up that way. The thought is that it will get easier. Nope.

Up hill and down dale into what must have been at least a 40 knot wind and the associated dust storm. Another sip of invisible water. By now my quads are burning and starting to fail to fire.

Another rise and more burning and yet another descent. The odd thing is that the wind is now in your face going down the hill and then in your face going up the hill. What the?

After much panting and threats to turn back (as if) I reach the bungee atrocity. Recalling that suspension bridge and wisely deciding that crossing it after a few wines, was not the brightest thing I could do that day, I stop and watch some humans elect to pay to be scared to death. We are curious beings.

Rested, it was time to turn back. The same happy suffering was in front of me and with the true grit of the Aussie Male, I was off, walking up the hill !

My legs failed me a few times as I got back to the half way point where peace and happiness meets nature in the raw. Stopping at a vacant river stop I took a wash and cooled off. What a joy.

The pleasure of exercise now flowed through my body, breathing deeply in and slowly out, wow, this ride was so worth it. I had 5k to go and I sucked it up like a kid with an All Day Gob Stopper.

Back in Arrowtown I had an hour to go on the bike ride so I bought 2 beers and didn’t peddle a centimetre.

News came in from back home that Sam Harris had been spotted locally. I wanted to write back that Sam Harris and I had been individually been spotted locally but I chose to let it slide.

My day was done. The honest truth is that I didn’t get to any of the wineries, the Bungee was as far as I got.

I had said that I needed a rest. Hmmm.
