Nikon SB-700 Speedlight Flash Review

Nikon SB-700

Nikon Speedlight systems are fantastic and if you are not a wedding, magazine etc professional photographer the Nikon SB-700 (the little brother to the D910) for approx two hundred dollars less with many similar features may be all you may need to expand your light creativity.

Nikon’s Creative Lighting System (CLS) is superb with its precise i-TTL (intelligent Through-The-Lens) metering flash exposures balancing power output with the ambient light. There are override compensations to select and manual settings (distance priority).

The main head of this speedlight can tilt up to 90 degrees in various increments for bounce light which can spread and soften the light for you and the head can also rotate in various degrees left to right. It also has a slide out white bounce card you can experiment with.

Nikon have packaged this product very well which includes in a Soft zip up case, a white diffusion dome, two hard plastic coloured filters, incandescent (orange) and Flourescent (green) to help with colour balance. It comes with a small stand that you can click the speedlight into when using the flash off camera. Shooting with the flash off camera will give you an interesting studio light type of effect. It will trigger off camera with a special optional extra cord or with infra red using your pop up flash if your model camera has one. Ideally radio triggers  would be ideal and you can check with Cameras Direct for information concerning those set ups.

Recycling time between flashes is very quick with the SB-700 depending on your settings and power output and I would suggest using Sanyo Eneloop rechargeable batteries (the choice of wedding photographers) that work extremely well and not expensive. You will need 4 x AA of these type batteries that are environmentally friendly, and come pre charged and maintain 70% even after 5 years when not in use, so therefore less charging even though they can be charged up to 1800 times.

The Nikon SB-700 doesn’t take up too much room in your camera bag and it will certainly come in handy, and there will be times that you will be glad you purchased one.
