Hello Photographers, Tom here from Cameras Direct with another Nikon lens review.

Today we’ll be looking at the Nikon 24-120mm AF-S f/4 G Series VR Lens.

To start with, this is a Nikon FX Lens.

Now FX when it is to do with Nikon, means that the lens was designed for full frame cameras. Of course you can use a FX Lens on a cropped sensor DSLR’s like the D7200 D90’s D5500 or even D3300 if you had one. You then apply the crop factor of that camera which Nikon’s crop factor is 1.5. So this 24-120mm would be a 36-180mm on a crop sensor Nikon camera.

The 24 to 120 was basically designed as a everyday sort of photographers lens for general photography.

The focal range gives you a nice wide angle at 24mm and then take you up to a 120mm, which is right in that lovely portrait range. Being such a versatile lens it’s lens that you can use on holidays, it’s a lens you could use for social events you could photograph the landscape with it and then sort of zoom in and do a nice portrait.

So very versatile, it is an F/4 so it’s constant all the way through the range. That means that if you are at 24 at f/4 and you zoom to 120 that f/4 would stay there. So you not losing light when you are zooming. It is a weather sealed mount on these lenses as are a lot of Nikon lenses.

It comes with the VR (vibration reduction). So the VR is going to help you in your hand holding it in low light situations, to prevent camera shake. You also have a dual VR system here in “Normal” and “Active”modes. The “Normal” is when you’re standing still and photographing something.

The “Active” is when you’re on a moving bus, train, boat, plane, bicycle etc.

Basically if you’re moving and photographing that’s when you use the “Active” VR mode.

The lens as you can see extends out when you zoom to 120. It is an internal focus system so that means when you focus the front element isn’t rotating and that means if you put a polarizing filter on it, it’s
not going to rotate the filter when you focus.

Finally the Nikon 24-120 takes a 77mm filter and I definitely recommend that you would use a UV filter on this big glass and I’d recommend probably the Hoya Pro1d or the Hoya HD UV filters.

The lens comes with a pouch and a lens hood as well.

So folks a really good quality lens. As I say its more about the versatility of this and I would highly recommend it to any of the Nikon full-frame users.
