Nelson to Westport South Island New Zealand – Self Drive

Today I envisioned to be a rest day. A day of driving, a few sights, not particularly exciting and a rest up. FORGET IT.

The 3 hour drive is yet again stunningly gorgeous. Mountains and clouds and mist and ravines. Quaint towns with not much more than a pub (maybe), a petrol station (rarely) and a bakery with superb coffee. And the problem with that is?

A hour or so into the journey and I come across Murchison. Quite possibly a thriving community a century ago but today it is a sleepy hollow catering for this tourist in need of fuel and a massive Orange and Walnut Scone dripping with butter and a hot cup of barista coffee. Thanks.

Onward, largely following the Buller River, stopping it seemed every kilometre for yet another photo (why oh why did I not bring a tripod and ND 32??? Ahhhh) you come to Inanghua Junction. If there was a town, I missed it, sorry. Maybe I was too busy taking in views like these.

Westport was to be my stop for the night. It was a last minute thing. A week prior I was going over the itinerary and realised in a bit of a panic, that I was missing a nights accom. Being Christmas, accommodation was thin picking but Westport being North West Coast was immune so I booked in breathing a sigh of relief. I didn’t have high hopes and had written the day off as I have said before.

This is when I want the photographers reading this to pay attention. DO NOT miss out on Westport, not for the town but for Cape Foulwind. Arriving at the car park I was a bit flat. Not excited at all, but I needed to get my “steps” for the day up to 10,000 so off to the lighthouse tread I. Regrettably I didn’t change from jeans to shorts as this (21 degrees) was to be a very hot and sweaty trek of some 6k around the Cape.

WOW WOW WOW. A photographers delight. I am head to toe tingly as I type this up with the memory.

Every step, every bend, every rise (you get the idea)  is yet another dream photo. The rugged coast line. The Flax grass. Wind swept flowers. The path. The ocean. Crashing waves and battered and broken rocks. WOW. To top it off, at the end of the walk there is a seal colony dare I say, frolicking.

Most of my photos of Cape Foulwind were taken on my Canon 6d and will end up on our instagram so I took very few on the iPhone. Here are a couple to whet your appetite.

Back to Westport. It was already 9pm and the sun was going down.

Absolutely wrecked, I elected for a simple meal. Tomorrow is New Years Eve.

Nigh nigh.
