Ever Wondered How Your Circular Polariser Works?

The main reason for using a Circular Polarizing Filter (CPL) is for the removal of surface reflections and glare if required from such things as rivers, oceans, rocks, skies etc. Fly fisherman use Polarizing Glasses to see fish underwater.These filters can be used also for product photography removing reflections when shooting watches, phones etc. Landscapes can become more vibrancy, contrast and colour saturation. With bluer skies the clouds become more distinct and plants more green with less reflection.The Circular aspect of this filter allows you to rotate to your desired effect. These filters reduce the amount of light through the lens to the sensor so if you’re in Manual mode you will need to make an adjustment of 1-2 stops.

If your camera is set to Auto-Exposure it will adjust for you by increasing the ISO, lowering the shutter speed or opening the aperture depending on what automatic setting you have selected.

Prime Lenses Example
For best results keep the light to one side not front on or coming directly from behind. Be aware when shooting with an extreme wide angle lens as you may get banding (over-polarized) where sections of the sky are darker than other parts. Check your angle to the sun and/or zoom in some more if you are using a zoom wide-angle lens. Remember it is not necessary to combine your UV filter with this filter just swap them over when needed.
