and to Lindis Pass.

Another day and yet another adventure. A 90 minute drive north brought me into Oamaru. I had no idea what to expect but for penguins (which I didn’t see). The drive is pleasant enough if you like hwy driving and on a mission but I took a bit of a detour.

Arriving in Oamaru you can immediately immersed into this ….

The little street is calming and warm (22 degrees today .. woohoo) and I wandered slowly trying to take in the history and heritage. For me however it was the beach side and small harbour that took my interest. This would appear to me to be a retirement town but as I didn’t stick around for more than hour, I am clearly unqualified and poorly informed to make that call.

The real adventure of the day was about to begin. From Oamaru I had to get to Omarama which is about 2 1/2 hours. Omarama is like Oamaru I guess in that it is a go via point unless you are into photography! I turn left and head to my backpackers location. I am staying at a 30000 acre sheep farm for two nights. It is just short of Lindis Pass which is west and not far from Lake Hawea. You might recall this lake from a prior blog.

I am staying at Dunstan Downs, roughing it tonight but at $30 a night what can I hope for. (As it turned out, I only stayed the one night and took off to Mt Cook.) The view however is so powerful and so gigantic that words cannot describe.

Deciding to go for a drive to find a river to sit by, I drive all of about 200 metres and turn right onto this …

Then I come across this little bridge. I am the only one around. Not a sole. An hour passes at least as I find myself engulfed by the beauty. The bridge is somehow romantic. Who would have thunkit. How could it be possible to take a bad photo? OK I took several that I deleted, but hey, who cares right.

Thinking that my day was done, I saw a sign saying 15k to Lindis Pass Summit. Why wait til tomorrow thought I.

It is now 6.50pm. The sun is still high in the sky and warm alas out of the sun it is a bit brisk. Tomorrow? Dunno. Might take a stroll. Might not.
