Canon EF-S 10-18mm 4.5-5.6 STM Wide Angle Zoom Lens Review

Great Canon wide angle lens reviewed here – Canon EF-s 10-18mm STM Lens Video Review above … below however you can read the rough transcript of our Canon EF-s 10-18mm STM Lens Video Review. Thanks very much for considering Cameras Direct.

Hello Photographers, Tom here from Cameras Direct with another Canon STM Lens Review.

Today we’re going to have a look at the relatively new Canon EF-S 10-18mm 4.5-5.6 STM Wide Angle Zoom Lens.

So what a wonderful little lens that they have released here. Wide-angle lenses normally, especially wide-angle zoom, are very expensive to purchase. However Canon has realised that this isn’t popular and introduced this wonderful little 10-18 for crop sensor Canon DSLR’s. The lens is a EF-S lens which means it is for cropped sensor Canon cameras, so this 10-18 won’t go on full frame Canons.

The 10-18 is a ultra-wide too wide angle zoom, that is affordable at about half the price of it’s more expensive 10-22mm brother and even cheaper than the Tamron and Sigma lens options.

So how do they do it? Well, build quality. Instead of being a metal build quality with the metal mount, yes they have dropped back to a plastic mount, with more plastics in the actual construction of the lens. But you know what, most photographers that will be using this lens aren’t going to be taking it on and off a million times to wear the mount out. So it’s not really relevant, what is relevant is it is super light and optically it is amazing.

In fact it will rival its 10-22 brother from Canon, and all the other ultra wide angles around this price point.
The 10-18mm does though have one massive advantage.

This is an “IS” lens which means it is has a built-in optical Image Stabilizer, so in low light conditions you’ll be able to hand hold the 10-18 down to maybe a 1/4 or an 1/8th of a second at the 10mm end, that’s astounding.

The upside is, no lugging a tripod around and getting sharper photos in general in low light situations without putting the camera down or using a tripod.

So that’s a huge plus. Another advantage.. the 10-18mm is also an STM lens.

Canon make a range of lens now that they call “STM” which stands for “Stepper Motor”. STM is more relevant to the videoing side with 700d 70d’s etc where as you video you won’t be able to hear the lens focusing.

STM is very fast and quiet, so that’s a big advantage as well.

The 10-18mm needs a 67mm filter size and again we recommend at least a UV filter.

We think that the 10-18mm is fantastic, super sharp, even wide open (aperture) and even at wide angle. Add that it is stabilized with an STM motor. What more can I say. Well done Canon.
