Hello photographers Tom here from Cameras Direct with another Canon Lens Review.

Today a quick look at Canon EF 40mm pancake F 2.8 STM lens.
Firstly this is an EF lens Canon users so it is designed for full frame cameras like 5d’s and 6d’s although of course you can use it on the cropped sensor canon dslr’s.

The crop factor of 1.6 would make it about a 65mm lens f/.8. As I say it is designed for full frame.

Why would you buy something so small?
Well this pancake design is designed basically to be less conspicuous than a big fat lens or a long zoom lens. The 40mm is very sharp with a maximum aperture of f/2.8.

So it’s not tremendously fast but of course f/2.8 means they can make the lens a lot smaller. For you street photographers out there who want to attach this to a 5d and as I say, don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself with big whopping lens, then this is ideal.

Another feature of this lens apart from its sharpness and its compact size is it is an STM lens. STM stands for stepper motor. So if you’re using this full video say on a crop sensor like a 7d Mark II or a 70d, then when you are videoing you will not hear the focus noise from the lens, only audio and that’s very important.

So that silent auto-focus makes it ideal for the videographer as well who wants a nice sharp prime lens.

Simple to use. Excellent price. The Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM Pancake Lens
